The most common adverse effects include muscle symptoms, fatigue and cognitive problems. A smaller proportion of patients report peripheral neuropathy—burning, numbness or tingling in their extremities—poor sleep, and greater irritability and aggression. Statins have rare serious side effects, such as rhabdomyolysis and hepatotoxicity, and have been associated with increased incidence of diabetes and hemorrhagic stroke. Patients increasingly report symptomatic side effects, such as muscle or joint pain and weakness, preventing them from continuing statin therapy, a condition referred as "statin intolerance."
