Negative staining of CSF shows many yeast cells and one budding yeast cells (Near 9 'o clock ) with pericellular halo. Impression : - Cryptococcus neoformans. (Microbiological diagnosis ) Clinical diagnosis : - Cryptococcal meningitis. Clinical correlation is suggested. Advice : - 1 )Anti HIV 1&2 Ab tests of the patient etc. 2 ) CSF for fungal culture (Sensitivity if asked for) and relevant tests to establish specific serotype. Whether Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans, or Cryptococcus neoformans var grubii, belongs to serotypes A and D which produces fungal meningitis predominantly among immunocompromised individuals. Or Cryptococcus gattii, serotypes B and C , which predominantly responsible for Cryptococcal meningitis among immunocompetent individuals. CryptoLa test is helpful when numbers of Cryptococcus is scanty / rare and clinically suspected fungal meningitis cases.
