60 female with post menopausal bleeding Pap smears

Smears are satisfactory for evaluation. Sheets of parabasal cells seen. Few singly scattered atypical squamous cells with hyper chromatic pleomorphic nuclei, irregular nuclear membrane and scant orangeophilic cytoplasm are noted. Tadpole cells are observed. Background shows tumordiathesis. Interpretation: epithelial cell abnormality: squamous cell carcinoma.

Agreed with Dr. Sumalatha Kasturi Madam’s excellent description.Satisfactory smears revealed atypical squamous cells with orangeophilic cytoplasm, vesicular to hyperchromatic nuclei with irregular nuclear membrane contours, multinucleation along with dyskeratotic cells and tadpole cells, tumor giant cells, viral induced giant cells, occasional prominence of nucleoli, mitotic figures & tumor diathesis in the background. Features are in favour of Squamous Cell Carcinoma.Advised correlation with Bx,IHC & HPV, high risk strains evaluation.
