The hallmark signs of meningitis include some or all of the following: sudden fever, severe headache, nausea or vomiting, double vision, drowsiness, sensitivity to bright light, and a stiff neck. Encephalitis can be characterized by fever, seizures, change in behavior, and confusion and disorientation.

MENINGITIS IS INFLAMMATION OF THE MENINGES COMMONLY CAUSED BY BACTERIAL, VIRAL, FUNGAL OR OTHER INFECTIONS... REMEMBER BACTERIAL MENINGITIS LIKE TUBERCULAR AND KILLS IMMEDIATELY. BLOOD CULTURES AND BLOOD GLUCOSE ARE ESSENTIAL FOR ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS BUT MUST NOT DELAY EMPIRICAL ANTIBIOTIC THERAPY..... WITH SUITABLE ANTIBIOTICS LIKE FOR PNEUMOCOCCUS START CEFOTAXIME, CEFTRIAXONE AND VANCOMYCIN. FOR MENINGOCOCCUS - BENZYL PENICILLIN OR CEFTRIAXONE+ SULBACTUM, CEFPODOXIM. ETC. TYPICAL C. S. F IN MENINGITIS:- PYOGENIC, TUBERCULOSIS, ASEPTIC OR VIRAL. GLUCOSE AND PROTEIN ARE DIFFERENT IN THESE 3 TYPES... NOW COMING TO ENCEPHALITIS, IT'S INFLAMMATION OF BRAIN PARENCHYMA AND IS ONLY DISTINGUISHED FROM MENINGITIS BY THE RELATIVES INVOLVEMENT OF MENINGES AND BRAIN. THERE IS USUALLY SOME DEGREE OF INFLAMMATION OF THE PARENCHYMA IN MENINGITIS AND OF THE MENINGES IN ENCEPHALITIS. VIIRUSES ARE THE COMMONEST CAUSES OF ENCEPHALITIS, HERPES SIMPLEX, JAPANESE B ENC....,,, COXSACKIE VIRUS, ECHO VIRUSES, AND RABIES.... ETC. SIGNS OF ENCEPHALITIS:- MENINGISM,, DECREASED CONSCIOUSNESS, CONVULSIONS FOCAL CNS OR PSYCHIATRIC FEATURES FOR EXAMPLE TEMPORAL LOBE FITS, AMNESIA OR ODD BEHAVIOR. MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT ANY FULMINANT ACUTE ENCEPHALITIS COULD BE DUE TO HSV AND SHOULD BE TREATED IMMEDIATELY WITH CEFTRIAXONE, BENZYL PENICILLIN +THIAMINE.
ANTIVIRAL LIKE ACICLOVIR IN ENCEPHALITIS AND NECK RIGIDITY IS IN MENINGITIS... FORGET TO MENTION...

Patients with meningitis have nuchal rigidity, headaches, photophobia, and fever.Patients with encephalitis have disruption of cognitive function that may include altered conciousness, disorientation, behavioral or speech difficulties, and focal neurological signs such as seizures hemiparesis. In reality ,the majority of infections cause a combination of symptoms & thus lead to meningiencephalitis. In classic presentations, however, bacterial meningitis leads to predominantly meningeal symptoms and processes, whereas encephalitis produces predominantly cerebral symptoms.
What about neck rigidity
