Valproate is highly teratogenic in Pregnancy. Should have been avoided in pregnancy. Also, it is secreted in breast milk and can rarely lead to bleeding disorders in babies. Depends on how educated parents are, how well they can maintain hygiene for formula feeds - if they can't, breast feeding is best, with caution for bleeding and drowsiness in babies. If they can- you can consider formula feed.

Small amounts of phenobarbitone and sodium valproate passes in to breast milk.Usually the amount is so small and unlikely to harm the baby .If the serum levels of the drugs are with in the therapeutic levels,it is safe .

Valproate safe Gardenal can be given plasma drug level to be checked regularly
