Vyayam is a breath-infused whole-body system of movement that develops mobility, coordination, respiratory function, alacrity of mind and lightness of body. Physically, we focus on opening, lubricating, and heating the joints, on maintaining the ability to move gracefully in any direction, including reaching, twisting, squatting, bending over, standing up and sitting down, and developing a strong sense of balance, both physically and mentally. Energetically, a major aim of the practice is learning to move the body from the breath. This differs from simply coordinating movement with the breath. Connecting the practitioner to the subtle energy currents within their own bodies, and eventually learning to direct these energies through mental efforts alone is a major reason to take up the practice. Sthula Vyayama which succeeds Sukshma Vyayama are about half a dozen exercises meant for the Sthula or the physical body. Sthula Vyayama, are well-suited to warm up and for general body work out. These exercises are more intensive and demanding for the body's musculature. Sukshma Vyayama is a workout for each internal organ, joint, muscle, opening and appendage. It handles the prevention and cure of many ailments and increases the strength, vigour and functioning of all the different organs and systems in the body. The main components of Sukshma Vyayama are: your breath. Sithilikarana Vyayama as the name indicates are loosening exercises performed normally with speed and repetitions. These dynamic practices are akin to conventional Physical training exercises except that most of these practices involve flexing of the spine.
