ASTEREXIS
It is the inability to maintain posture . Here patient is unable to maintain his hand in dorsiflexion at wrist joint . Because there will be suppression of descending reticular activating system which is needed to maintain tone and posture due to hepatic encephalopathy or uraemia or hypercarbia. It can be seen at other places like plantar dorsiflexion, making tight fist, close eyes tightly. Classically seen in West Haven's grade 2 hepatic encephalopathy
Asterixis is the downward drift and abnormal recovery motion of the hand with the fingers either together or outstretched.
