To select cough syp depends on aetiology and type of cough and age and status of pt Pediatric pt sedative cough syp like codeine are avoided Old age pts are usually dysponic hence cough syps with bronchodilators prefered Dry cough requires suppressants Wet cough need expectorants Pregnant ladies should be avoided with heavy doses of antihistaminics and sedatives So it all your clinical judgement and requirement of pt
