A condition that occurs in a baby whose mother is infected with the rubella virus. Congenital rubella syndrome occurs when the rubella virus in the mother affects the developing baby, usually in the first three months of pregnancy. Since the introduction of the rubella vaccine, cases have decreased dramatically. When rubella infection occurs during early pregnancy, serious consequences–such as miscarriages, stillbirths, and a constellation of severe birth defects in infants–can result.

Signs are multiple congenitalanomalies that can result in fetal death. Diagnosis is by serology and viral culture. There is no specific treatment. Prevention is by routine vaccination. (Thanks)
