Most common cardiac abnormalities found in infants of Diabetic mother are Ventricular septal defect Transposition of great arteries Aortic Stenosis. Hypertropic cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Defects involving great arteries including truncus arteriosus, and double outlet right ventricle, are also more prevalent in IDM ( infants of Diabetic mother) Congenital heart disease occurs in 5% of IDMs. Cardiovascular adaptation to extra uterine life,in IDM with respiratory distress, the closure of ductus arteriosus and post natal decrease in pulmonary artery pressure are also delayed in these patients. This may explain the frequency of respiratory problems with late recovery in such patients. Primary Pulmonary Hypertension is associated with and aggrevated by polycythemia which is seen frequently in these neonates.
