His mother is worried that his current management of anti-malarials is not enough, given that her niece suffered a long hospital stay when she too was diagnosed with malaria. P. falciparum is responsible for (almost) all severe human illnesses and deaths due to malaria, in a condition called complicated or severe malaria. Complicated malaria occurs more commonly in children.
