Role of gargling in maintaining oral health

Benefits of Gargling During COVID-19 Pandemic Gargling is the act of bubbling liquid in the mouth. It is also the washing of one's mouth and throat with a liquid that is kept in motion by breathing through it with a gurgling sound. Vibration caused by the muscles in the throat and back of the mouth causes the liquid to bubble and flurry around inside the mouth cavity. Gargling is a traditional home remedy recommended to soothe a sore throat. Although gargling would not eradicate severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), it might reduce viral load in the throat and positively influence the course of the disease, claims research. Benefits of saltwater gargle The addition of salt to a glass of warm water used as a gargle creates an osmosis effect. The concentration of salt draws fluids from the mouth and throat tissues to relieve a painful infection. It also breaks up thick mucus, which can remove irritants like allergens, bacteria, and fungi from the throat. Reduce respiratory infections Clear your nasal passageways Cut down on harmful bacteria in the mouth Soothe inflammation and prevent infection from returning Betadine Gargle Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash contain povidone-iodine which kills a wide range of germs including bacteria, viruses, fungi, spores, and simple organisms. Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash are used for the treatment of acute infections of the lining of the mouth and throat, for example, inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) and mouth ulcers. For cleansing the mouth (oral hygiene) before, during, and after dental and mouth surgery. How to use Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash Safely Use orally (in your mouth) as a gargle and mouthwash. Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash should NOT be swallowed. Adults, the elderly, and children over 6 years of age: Use undiluted with an equal volume of warm water. Gargle or rinse with up to 10 ml of Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash for up to 30 seconds without swallowing. Repeat up to four times daily, for up to 14 days in a row, or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not use for more than 14 days. Other different natural ways of gargling include: Warm water and turmeric Warm water and clove/ginger Warm water and apple cider vinegar Warm water and baking soda All the above-mentioned natural ingredients possess anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects preventing infections, sore throat, dental pain, and bad breath. During the current pandemic, “throat gargling habits with tap water or saline might be suggested for high-risk populations of quarantined people and medical staff,” write the researchers.

Mouthwash or gargling is good in maintaining oral health even without pandemic. Removal of food particle etc very much practiced by our elders with plain water after every meal .
