SPINE SURGERY: A FACT FILE

spine surgery facts from neuroscience perspective: 1. it's a surgery primarily aimed at protecting and saving the compressed neural elements within a bony canal (like brain is within skull, spinal cord is within vertebral column ..nature's protection to delicate and most essential neural structures. A brain surgery or skull fracture is not a bone surgery, similarly a spine surgery is not a bone surgery.) 2. nerves are irreparable, not regenerable..delay in surgery results in permanent nerve insult. 3. delaying a surgery also leads to permanent end organ damage ..i.e. weakens muscles, ligaments and joints...the pains from which remain, compromising result. 4. none non surgical means can cure and save the nerves if found compressed significantly. on MRI. 5. a neuro spine surgeon can reliably judge where a surgery is indicated and where not...arbitary judgements to offer alternatieves actually harm the patient. 6. spine surgery is essential, as safe or even safer than most other surgeries and yields very good outcome if done in time and in hands of expert neuro spine surgeons. 7. spine surgery as a last resort is an absolute false concept and propagated with ignorance or business intentions by non surgical treatment providers... a timely surgery is the correct concept. 8. all fears about spine surgery are artificial, baseless, and propagated by ignorance, few non expert surgical endeavours or for business promotions by non surgical treatment providers ....we see almost all patients reaching for surgery in a much delayed complicated, irreversible damage phase...obviously, the result is grossly compromised and this fact is cleverly projected as a deterrent for other needy cases by such elements... as a medical fraternity, collectively we should work to bring a change ...because patients and society is made to suffer heavily by avoiding a potential surgical cure.

Very well explained and educative post But spine surgeon and pt ratio is very poor in india or say world.even your article shows that our fraternity don't know basic concept of spine surgery or neurosurgery and neurovascular etc. It needs proper assessment of condition and regular hammering to educate doctors and community as a unit.
