Toe Walking In Children

There are 3 main reasons why children may Toe Walk 1. Sensory processing problems Children have difficulty processing the sensory input from their feet, an example could be Autism spectrum disorders 2. Neuromotor conditions Conditions such as muscle dystrophy, cerebral palsy and any abnormalities in tone. 3. Idiopathic toe walkers The first two conditions should be ruled out and child should not have any delays in development in gross motor, social , cognitive and sensorimotor play domains. The earlier the intervention , the better. The vicious cycle of toe-walking leading to short gastrosoleus tendon leading to inability to rest heel on the ground should be broken at earliest. Conservative management with exercises and sensory input and maybe night splints helps.
