W-sitting

Some children prefer to sit in W-sitting position ( as shown in picture) as it gives them passive stability at hips and trunk and leaves both hands free for play. However consistent use of this position increases the possibility of tightness in hip and trunk muscles , internal rotators of hips. The femurs remain anteverted. Kids having Dysplasia can end up dislocating their hips if this position is used. Also it is not possible to do correct weights shifts in this position, the child also cannot rotate the trunk effectively . The child should be encouraged to sit 90-90 on a chair with table in front , or then in long sitting position is floor sitting is required. Cross legged sitting can also be used instead of W sitting. All these positions encourage proper alignment of bones of legs during growth and also maintain muscle length.
