World No Tobacco Day 2018 is observed across the world on 31st May by the World Health Organization (WHO) to make people aware of all the problems and health complications caused by tobacco chewing or smoking. This habit can lead to many illnesses like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (also called COPD), lung cancer, heart attacks, strokes, chronic heart diseases, emphysema and a  variety of cancers.   It was first observed on 7th April in 1988 at the 40th WHO anniversary and later it was declared as No Tobacco Day on 31st of May every year. Tobacco use kills at least one out of the 10 people worldwide every year. The number of tobacco users all around the world is estimated at 1.3 billion. Around 100 million of premature deaths can be prevented by reducing tobacco usage by 20-25% by 2020 which is possible by promoting all the anti-smoking efforts and measures such as banning TV or radio advertising for tobacco and launching new and effective public awareness campaigns. Non-profit and public health organizations along with individuals from across the country participate very actively in campaigns involving the distribution of leaflets, placards and posters displaying information related to the bad and harmful effects of tobacco usage and smoking. The theme selected by the WHO for promotion on World No Tobacco Day 2018 is ‘Tobacco and heart disease’ .

Thank you for the detailed update @Dr. Hemant Adhikari When the Indian Govt is very well aware of the injurious effects of tobacco and its products, and Govt has asked the manufacturers to display horrific pictures of Tobacco caused patients..... Can't the Govt straight away PROHIBIT & BAN the cultivation of Tobacco and manufacture of its products altogether or it only eyes its monetary benefits in the form of increased taxes every year under the false pretence of caring for Public Health..!!!
