An intermediate for the synthesis of mevalonic acid, ketone bodies and cholesterol and a metabolic product for leucine; it can be formed de novo from acetyl coenzyme A (CoA) and acetoacetyl CoA by HMG-CoA (3-Hydroxy-3-Methylglutaryl-Coenzyme A) synthase.
