Breastfeeding newborns during the first hour of life increases their chances of survival, whereas those who are delayed risk serious health problems. Colostrum, the breast milk secreted during the first few days is extremely rich in nutrients and antibodies. It acts as a child’s first ‘vaccine’, protecting against disease and death.
