Human PTN wild-type allele is located within 12p12.1-p11.2 and is approximately 14 kb in length. This allele, which encodes pleiotrophin protein, plays a role in mitogenesis for endothelial, epithelial, and fibroblast cells and neurite outgrowth. Further, aberrations of the gene result in allelic variants that are implicated in tumor invasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis.
