CAUSES OF HYPERPROLACTONEMIA : Hyperprolactinemia in females leads to amenorrhea, galactorrhoea and infertility. Causes are PHYSIOLOGICAL: 1) Pregnancy. 2) Post partum. 3) Wet nursing reflex ( crying baby) 4) Chest wall reflex. 5) Stress. 6) Sleep. 7) Physical activity. PHARMACOLOGICAL : 1) DOPAMINE RECEPTOR BLOCKERS - Phenothiazines . -Chlorpromazine. -Metoclopramide. -Butyrophenones.-Haloperidol 2) SEROTONIN REUPTAKE INHIBITORS : -Fluoxetine. 3) H2 ANTAGONISTS - Cimetidine. 4) TRICYCLIC ANTIDEPRESSANTS: -Amitriptyline. 5) DOPAMINE SYNTHESIS INHIBITORS. -Methyldopa. 6) CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKERS: - Verapamil 7) HORMONES - Estrogen. PATHOLOGICAL: 1) Pituitary disease. 2) Prolactinomas. 3) Acromegaly. 4) Hypothalamus disease. 5) Tumours of Pituitary. 6) Non functioning Pituitary adenoids. 7) Meningioma. 8) Craniopharyngioma. 9) Empty Sella syndrome. 10) Inflammatory- sarcoidosis, Histiocytosis. 11) Neurogenic lesions. 12) Chest wall lesions. 13) Spinal cord lesions. OTHERS : 1) Primary hypothyroidism. 2) Adrenal insufficiency. 3) Chronic renal failure. 4) Cirrhosis. 5) Pseudocyesis. 6) Epileptic seizures.
