Good afternoon Curofians. 55 year female, biopsy tongue growth. Give microscopic description and differentiation. Best regards. (Credits : Dr. Kazi Wajid Husain,.MD)

Revered sirs and madams, thank you very much for your participation. SUGGESTIVE KEY : MATERIAL: BIOPSY, BASE OF THE TONGUE, GROWTH. MICROSCOPY : Section studied shows parts of an infiltrating neoplasm composed of of cords, nests and sheets of moderately differentiated, malignant squamoid cells that exhibit abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and large moderately pleomorphic round to oval vesicular nuclei with evident nucleoli. Dyskeratotic cells and keratin pearls are noted. Occasional mitotic figure is seen. Perineural invasion is focally present. Adjacent stroma is chronically inflamed. IMPRESSION : BIOPSY, BASE OF THE TONGUE GROWTH- FEATURES ARE SUGGESTIVE OF SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA, MODERATELY DIFFERENTIATED. Thank you all. Comments are welcome.

respected sir.,, section studied reveled a neoplastic lesion with cells arranged in sheets,,solid nests, the individual tumor cells are large showing hyperchromatic nuclei and marked pleomorphism,,at places there are keratin pearl formation also seen..places show necrosis.. IMP: squamous cell carcinoma tongue..

Moderately Differentiated Squamous Cell Carcinoma. 7th Image : Neural Invasion. Its a well known event in Head & Neck SCCs.

Revered sirs and madams, Is there any specific pathology do we see in figure 7 ?

Revered Dr. Suhela Rachakonda is there any other tissue apart from tumor?

i think there is no need to write a word infiltrating b'coz after viewing this phenomenon then only we should write SCC or else we would rather prefer the word dysplasia or in situ or verrucus or so on.... Thanking you all agreed on MDSCC

Revered sir, Rightly pointed out. The squamous cell carcinoma in the current case is precisely infiltrating the nervous tissue. Which deserves a special mention in the description, as it is prognostically linked to further management. Perineural invasion has a poor prognosis in SCC of TONGUE. Impression should just be SCCMD. thank you sir, Best regards.

Squamous cell carcinoma.

moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma

moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma

Infiltrating scc

neoplastic cells arranged in sheets and islands with dysplastic features like individual cell keratinisation, increased nuclear cytoplasmic ratio, keratin pearls, disrupted basement membrane and invasion into underlying coonective tissue with intense inflammatory reaponse
