Liver cirrhosis is the most important cause. Chronic kidney disease and sometimes ulcerative colitis (protein malabsorption) can also cause it. Protein lossing enteropathies can be D/D. Severe Iron deficiency anaemia. Chronic fungal infections. Chemotherapeutic drugs or heavy metal poisoning.
